Troubleshooting: File opens in remote app instead of local app
Fix cases where files open inside the remote session instead of opening locally through TwinPane in AVD, RDS, RemoteApp, or Citrix.
Use this guide when users double-click a file in the remote session but it opens remotely instead of on the local machine.
Symptoms
- PDF/Office/CAD files open inside the remote host app.
- No local-app launch on the endpoint.
- Behavior is inconsistent across users or host pools.
1. Confirm TwinPane connection state first
If Client and Server are not connected, local open cannot occur.
Run through the connection checklist in:
2. Verify file-open handler configuration
On the server side, validate handler-related settings in:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\FileSyncBridge\Server
Check relevant values like InstallHandlerAutomatically and confirm expected deployment defaults are present.
Reference: Registry keys (Client and Server).
3. Validate default app associations and policy conflicts
Remote host policies can force local file extensions to open with remote apps.
Check:
- File association policies in the remote environment.
- App-layering/session policies that override handler behavior.
- Published-app specific rules in RemoteApp/Citrix environments.
If policy enforces remote opening for certain extensions, align policy intent with TwinPane behavior expectations.
4. Test with a known extension matrix
Use a quick extension matrix in pilot:
.pdf.docx.xlsx- One app-specific extension used by your users
Record for each extension:
- Opens locally as expected or not.
- Whether behavior differs by host pool or user group.
This helps isolate extension-level policy overrides.
5. Check deployment consistency across hosts
In multi-host environments, partial deployment is a common cause.
Verify all relevant hosts have:
- Same TwinPane Server version.
- Same registry defaults.
- Same policy baseline.
If rollout uses Intune/SCCM, confirm assignment scoping and detection parity.
6. Confirm user-context execution path
Because behavior is user-session dependent, verify on the affected user profile:
- User is signed in normally.
- Startup sequence completed.
- No endpoint control blocked TwinPane runtime for that user context.
7. Rapid remediation playbook
For affected host/user pairs:
- Confirm connection state.
- Re-apply policy baseline.
- Reinstall TwinPane Server/Client in pilot scope.
- Re-test extension matrix.
- Expand fix to broader scope after confirmation.
Installer commands are in Silent install (Client and Server).
8. Escalation data to collect
Before contacting support, capture:
- Extension(s) affected.
- Environment type (AVD/RDS/RemoteApp/Citrix).
- Whether issue is host-specific or user-specific.
- Relevant registry values for handler configuration.
- TwinPane versions on client and server.
